The Longest Way Home

I don’t know what it is about travel blogs, but I find most are boring, lack interest and generally a big turn off. However, I came across this one on twitter, The Longest Way Home
It’s written by a person who is looking for home. After an unfulfilled childhood and early adult life, the author decided not to ‘put up with his lot’, but to do something about it. He sold up everything, stuffed his worldly possessions into a back pack and set out on an amazing journey, to find his home. You might think that this is just an ordinary story about a teenager on a gap year, but no, there is real substance to what this man is doing, not just spending a few weeks or months searching for home, but years. As I write, he has been out there for 5 years, 2 months and 24 days.
The greatest attraction I find, is that I feel as though I am reading someones autobiography as it’s been written, in real time. No editors or publishers to sanitise what is written. The web site might not be the best layout, but who cares, it’s what is written and photographed that matters, and the motivation behind the whole thing. The blog is often updated using flaky wireless connections or internet cafes with limited facilities. Being a seasoned traveller myself, I find the whole approach refreshing and actually makes me want to travel again, something I haven’t felt like doing for a long time. I also think that after reading the blog, there maybe a little of that yearning in us all, to ‘find home’. The only difference that separates us, is the motivation and bravery to actually go and do it.
It’s worth signing up for the latest news letters, as you get a free e-book, 5 Top Places to Travel and Photograph. The book has some very useful tips on travel photography many of which are relevant where ever you are, regardless of your level skill of equipment.
