Windows Live Writer

Using wordpress, like most other bloging software is easy once you have a little practice, particularly if you write on a regular basis. But what if you don’t write that regular, or what about the complete technophobic? I’m pleased to say that if the Wordpress admin panel completely intimidates you, its worth looking at Windows Live Writer.

I found this all out today (shows how behind the times I can be on occasions). I had to find a way to easily put posts and pages into our web sites with a simple word-processor like interface. ie something that we are all familiar with. I’ve tried all sorts of alternative text editor plugins for wordpress, but if anything, they all seemed to complicate matters more so than the standard one. I found someone comment about Live Writer on another blog, so I decided to give it a go.

Microsoft Live Writer is a free download, and it easily installs onto your computer, you then set up your blog details in the settings, and away you go. In use, it looks very much like a simplified and cut down version of Word, but it is quite feature rich. You can write whatever it is you need and save your work to your hard drive (handy if you are not able to be online), or publish your post or page direct to your web site. What’s more, you can view content already published, edit or delete as you wish. Don’t be too quick with that delete button, it will most definitely take content off of your site. As long as you remember that, it’s a feature that makes content management easier without having to go on line, log in etc.etc. But when online, it’s live and active on your site.

Ever tried using tables in a post? Painful getting it right. I personally feel it’s a bad thing to use tables, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. In Live Writer, tables couldn’t be easier, not perfect, but then tables are not perfect by design anyway. As with most things, it isn’t possible to do everything that can be done in the Wordpress admin panel, but for just putting your words up on the ‘net, you can always keyword and set the page/post description later, and sort page order if you need to. I cant recommend this application enough and why I didn’t use it earlier, heaven knows, but I do now.
