Caithness and the Scottish Highlands are steeped in ancient history and traditions, as well as being blessed with some of the world’s most stunning scenery and breathtaking coastline, which attracts rare and beautiful wildlife. Caithness is also the chosen home of many wonderful artists and crafts people.
Canisp house is ideally located to explore Caithness and beyond, with ferries to Orkney close by. Whether you decide to walk, cycle, or travel by car, you can not fail to find something to suit your interests.
Wildlife will be found in abundance where ever you go, from rock pools and coastal footpaths, to mountains, rivers & forests. A vast range of flora & fauna can be seen, from rare birds in our skies, to dolphins and whales in our ocean. Sporting activities vary from the traditional fishing and golf, which is never far away, to the more adventurous surfing, quad-biking or power-kiting.
Arts, crafts and shopping are easy to find, in the nearby towns of Wick and Thurso. Many individual workshops and studios are also open throughout the area, featuring a stunning array of hand-crafted items from jewellery to glassware, pottery to paintings and weaving to carpentry.
Historical sites go back to neolithic times and continue through iron-age and Norse relics, to the more recent history of our distilleries and herring ports.
Other popular activities range from astronomy to photography. In the winter months you maybe lucky enough to see a display from the Aurora Borealis. In mid-summer we almost see the midnight sun.
When you have tired of all the activities on offer, you can return to relax at Canisp House and watch the sun set, with a wee dram or plan your next day’s activity.
